Background

Access to specialist healthcare can be challenging for people living in remote and regional areas. Working with Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (BRHS), Velrada helped pioneer an innovative telemedicine solution that connects patients, nurses, and medical specialists through mixed reality technology, improving access to care without the need for extensive travel.

The Challenge

Supporting geographically isolated communities required a new approach to healthcare delivery. BRHS wanted to bridge the distance between remote patients and metropolitan specialists, reducing the burden of travel while ensuring clinicians had the information and visibility needed to provide high-quality care.

Velrada’s Solution

Leveraging Microsoft HoloLens, Microsoft Teams, Azure Space, Starlink connectivity, and Velrada’s Mixed Reality as a Service solution, the project helped transform how specialist consultations are delivered, providing:

  • Real-time collaboration between remote specialists and frontline nursing staff
  • An immersive mixed reality experience that allows clinicians to see what nurses see during consultations
  • Improved access to specialist healthcare for remote and regional communities
  • Reduced travel requirements for patients and their families
  • Hands-free clinical support that enhances decision-making and patient care
  • A scalable model that can be adopted across additional regional health and aged care services

This is a really exciting development for telemedicine – nurses can work hands-free to provide treatment or assistance during the sessions, patients can explain their symptoms directly and doctors can see what the nurses see in better detail to support clinical decision making and management for the patient.

Outcome & Impact

By combining mixed reality technology with reliable cloud connectivity, Velrada helped BRHS overcome one of the biggest barriers facing remote healthcare delivery – distance. The solution gave clinicians new ways to collaborate, while bringing specialist expertise closer to communities that have traditionally faced limited access to care. Demonstrating how emerging technologies can help reshape healthcare delivery, creating more equitable access to services and improving outcomes for people living in some of Australia’s most remote communities.
